River Basins: Explained!

A river basin is the land that water flows across or under on its way to a river. Just as a bathtub catches all of the water that falls within its sides, a river basin sends all of the water falling within it to the mainstream and out to tributaries or to the ocean.

River basins have typical features, these include:

  • Tributaries - smaller rivers flowing into a larger river.
  • Watershed  - an area of highland surrounding the river basin.
  • Confluence - where a river joins another river.
  • Source       - the start of a river.
  • Mouth            - Where a river meets a lake, the sea or an ocean.
