Water Cycle & River Basin

THIS IS AN IMAGE TO SHOW YOU GUYS HOW WATER CYCLE WORK...

KEYWORDS FOR WATER CYCLE

Solar radiation-Heat from the sun . This provides the source of energy for the water cycle and for river systems

Evaporation- Water in the sea, or in river basins, is turned into water vapour (a gas) by solar radiation.

Condensation-When air rises up, it cools. The cooling can turn some of the water vapour back into water droplets. These form clouds

Precipitation- If water droplets become too heavy they fall, as rain, snow, hail, dew ETC

Run-off- Some of the precipitations runs off, over the surface. It forms rivers, which run into lakes or seas

RIVER BASIN / DRAINAGE BASIN

EXAMPLE: ^

drainage basin is an extent or an area of land where surface water from rain and melting snow or ice converges to a single point, usually the exit of the basin, where the waters join another waterbody, such as a river, lake, reservoir, estuary, wetland, sea, or ocean.

KEYWORD FOR RIVER BASIN / DRAINAGE BASIN

Tributaries - smaller rivers flowing into a larger river.

A Watershed - an area of highland surrounding the river basin.

A confluence - where a river joins another river.

Source - the start of a river.

Mouth - Where a river meets a lake, the sea or an ocean.

River basin - The whole area of land that is drained by a river and its tributaries

Flood plain - An area of flat land close to a river, which is covered with water when the river floods
